The following codes were deleted: 97122 Manual traction 97250 Myofascial release/soft tissue mobilization 97260 Manipulation by physician, one area 97261 Manipulation by physician, each additional area 97265 Joint mobilization, one or more areas ------------------------- The following code was added: 97140 Manual therapy techniques (eg, mobilization/manipulation, manual lymphatic drainage, manual traction), one or more regions, each 15 minutes --------------------------- Explanation: If you are currently billing for manual traction (97122) and/or myofascial release (97250), you would now use 97140. 97260, since it covers one area, would correlate to 98940. Since 97261 covers each additional area, the corresponding CMT code would be 98941. 97265 would be replaced by 98943. Deleted Use instead 97122 97140 97250 97140 97260 98940 97261 98941 97265 98943 ---------------------- For your information, the chiropractic manipulative treatment codes (CMT) were instituted in 1998. The CMT codes are graduated depending on the number of areas of the spine being adjusted. There are five distinct areas defined: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, and pelvis. Your fee for the service should also be graduated with 98940 being lower than 98941. They are described as follows: 98940 CMT, 1-2 areas 98941 CMT, 3-4 areas 98942 CMT, 5 areas 98943 CMT, extraspinal (includes head, temporomandibular joint, upper extremities, lower extremities, rib cage) ------------------ As a refresher, the other codes added in 1998: 97780 Acupuncture, one or more needles, without electrical stimulation 97781 Acupuncture, one or more needles, with electrical stimulation 97001 Physical therapy evaluation 97002 Physical therapy re-evaluation
