- B Vitamins Slows the Rate of Brain Atrophy in Mild Cognitive Impairment. Study results showed that the group taking the B-vitamin cocktail experienced a 30-percent slower rate of brain atrophy, on average, and in some cases patients experienced reductions as high as 53 percent. Greater rates of atrophy were associated with lower cognitive test scores. In the control group, the the rate of atrophy was directly associated with elevated homocysteine levels.
- Maintaining a Vitalistic Perspective in Chiropractic in the Postmodern Era. Vitalism is only problematic if we begin with the assumption that a mechanist worldview or paradigm is the correct way to explain the world. In postmodern thought, a multiplicity of worldviews may coexist. One view is no more valid or correct than another and these divergent views are judged best by their utility under various circumstances. Exploring clinical practices and methodologies, such as whole systems research, arising from a vitalistic perspective could lead to innovations in both patient care and research, if pursued with flexible non-dogmatic thinking.
- Spinal Manipulative Therapy and Its Role in the Prevention, Treatment and Management of Chronic Pain. Chiropractic is one of the largest complementary and alternative medicine professions, and one of the largest licensed health care professions in the United States. [3-4] It is considered to be a holistic and wellness-oriented profession, traditionally not using drugs or surgery to help patients maintain health. Care typically incorporates wellness, lifestyle and prevention approaches with patient management, and focuses on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Services provided by doctors of chiropractic have demonstrated high patient satisfaction, cost-effectiveness and parity compared to other types of care for similar conditions.
- Chiropractic and Health Care Reform: An Uncertain Future or an Opportunity?. Chronic pain is a worldwide epidemic. It is characterized as “pain that persists beyond normal tissue healing time” [1] and is physiologically distinct from acute nociceptive pain. The current research estimates the prevalence of chronic pain in the general population to be anywhere from 10–55%, [2] predominantly affecting the adult population. Studies indicate that the prevalence of chronic pain in the over-60 age group is double that for younger adults. [3] Furthermore, over 80% of elderly (over 65) adults suffer from some form of painful chronic joint disease [4] and greater than 85% of the general population will experience some form of chronic myofascial pain during their lifetime. [5]
- Nature and Nurture: World-first Discovery Sheds New Light On Congenital Birth Defects. Scientists have made a landmark discovery that could help women minimize or even avoid the risk of having a baby born with congenital birth defects. The study is published April 5 in the international journal Cell. The scientists, from universities in Australia, Japan, Canada and the United States, including Arizona State University, show for the first time how “nature” and “nurture” interact to increase the severity and likelihood of developing birth defects, including abnormalities in the heart, kidneys, brain, limbs and cranio-facial regions (cleft palate).

The LINKS Section ~ Chiropractic Care Effective For Migraine Headache
-
- A new Norwegian systematic review of manual therapies for migraine prevention concluded that chiropractic spinal manipulation appears to be equal to medications (propranolol & topiramate) in their ability to prevent migraines.
- A new A retrospective claims analysis was just performed on 85,402 Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee patient files. In this study, care costs with a DC were almost 40% less than care provided by an MD This clearly demonstrates the savings that are possible when a patient is permitted to choose a chiropractor rather than an MD for their care.
- Another new systematic review of the literature in Spine Journal finds that that 5 to 10 sessions of SMT administered over 2 to 4 weeks achieve equivalent or superior improvement in pain and function when compared with other commonly used interventions, such as physical modalities, medication, education, or exercise, for short, intermediate, and long-term follow-up.
- A new study in Spine Journal reports that the average cost for a lumbar discectomy procedure was $7,841. Successful chiropractic management only costs a small fraction of that amount, and this article clearly acknowledges that many patients will improve with nonoperative therapy, (and so) a trial of conservative management is appropriate (before resorting to surgery).
- A January 2010 study in the journal of Clinical Rehabilitation involved 210 patients with chronic, nonspecific low back pain. This study compared the effects of spinal manipulation, physiotherapy and back school on their complaints. The results? Spinal manipulation was associated with higher functional improvement and long-term pain relief than back school or individual physiotherapy, and pain recurrences and drug intake were also reduced compared to those other approaches.
- Review a new study, the first to use standing MRI to demonstrate why overloaded backpacks cause pain in children.
- NOTE: Informed Consent involves discussing the Iatrogenic Side Effects of standard medical alternatives to conservative chiropractic care.

ChiroZINE ~ Spinal Manipulation May Help Reduce Spinal Degenerative Joint Disease and Disability
-
- Learn about how adjusting the hypomobile manipulable joint lesion impacts the progress of Degenerative Joint Disease.
- This novel study wanted to determine whether giving the children rolling luggage to carry their school books would reduce spinal stress. As it turns out, what might work well for Mom at the airport, does not work so well for Junior, lugging his books across uneven sidewalks on the way to school.
- Three studies comparing spinal manipulation with acupuncture — a pilot study, then a randomized controlled clinical trial, followed by a one-year follow-up study — demonstrated that chiropractic care was the only “treatment” that provided broad-based long-term benefits.
- In another study, data collected from 28,807 treatment consultations and 19,722 new patients, reviewed significant predictors for immediate improvement with care.
- Another new survey reveals that a much higher percentage of chiropractic patients seek more than “musculoskeletal care” than has previously been recognized.
- A new retrospective analysis of 70,274 member-months in a 7-year period within an IPA, comparing medical management to chiropractic management, demonstrated decreases of 60.2% in-hospital admissions 59.0% less hospital days, 62.0% less outpatient surgeries and procedures, and 85% less pharmaceutical costs when compared with conventional medicine IPA performance.

The Free Rehabilitation Monographs Have Been Upgraded!
-
The Monographs have being updated with “hot links” (a.k.a anchored links) to make it easier to navigate through these remarkable articles. Dr. Richard C Schafer donated this collection of rehabilitation monographs to our profession. You will find them of great value! "RC" was the first chiropractor to be published by a medical publication house (Williams & Wilkins) and he is still our profession's most prolific author.

Acupuncture For Combating Auto-Immune Disorders
-
- A newly acquired FULL TEXT article titled The Neuroimmune Basis of Anti-inflammatory Acupuncture proposes that the anti-inflammatory power of acupuncture may be more successful for the treatment of a number of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases than standard medical management.
- In a second study, reviewing who uses acupuncture, and for what purpose, in a group of 9408 acupuncture patients, 74% of patients were female. The most common main complaint reported was musculo-skeletal (38%), followed by psychological (11%), general (9%), neurological (8%) and gynaecological/obstetric (8%), while 5% of patients were seeking treatment for their general well-being. Read about this in the Articles section. Learn more about this ancient healing technique.

Chiropractic Combined with Rehab Corrects Chronic Cervical Pain and Improves Postural Control
-
This new case report details how chiropractic care, combined with a well-designed rehab program reduced pain and improved postural balance in a woman with a 2-year complaint of persistant cervico-thoracic spine pain and suboccipital headaches. Another recent report details how chiropractic helped correct Erb's Palsy in an 8-year old child. Another study details how chiropractic care reduced menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea). This section will continue to collect relevant case studies published in the peer-reviewed literature. Interested in sharing a case study with the profession on our website? Patients in Medicare Demonstration Project Give Their Chiropractors High Marks
-
Kathleen Sebelius, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, just released an update on the Chiropractic Demonstration Project in Medicare (conducted from 4-1-2005 to 3-31-2007) to the President and Congress. One of the significant findings of this report was that patients reported a high rate of satisfaction with the care they receive from doctors of chiropractic. When asked to rate their satisfaction on a 10-point scale, 87 percent of patients in the study gave their doctor of chiropractic a level of 8 or higher. What’s more, 56 percent of those patients rated their chiropractor with a perfect 10. You may want to explore more about Medicare's Chiropractic Demonstration Project, which tested expanded access to chiropractic services for America's senior citizens, in a two-year, four-site demonstration project. This section provides the locations and the expanded services chiropractors will provide.
