- Get the Lead Out!. When the FDA finally got around to testing 324 multivitamin-mineral products that target children and pregnant women, they found that only 4 of them were lead-free. [1] Now, new research now suggests that even low levels of lead in a supplement can have adverse effects on your children. Why not use a supplement made correctly, so you can protect your family?

- Danish Researchers Claim That Antibiotics Could Cure 40% of Chronic Back Pain Patients . In the second paper, the scientists proved they could cure chronic back pain with a 100-day course of antibiotics. In a randomised trial, the drugs reduced pain in 80% of patients who had suffered for more than six months and had signs of damaged vertebra under MRI scans.
- Spinal Manipulation: The Right Choice for Relieving Low Back Pain. Enjoy this review of 3 different studies that clearly demonstrate the superiority of chiropractic care over conventional medical treatment for low back pain.
- McMaster chiropractic working group aims to further health research and interdisciplinary care. Research is key to developing better treatments and care protocols to eliminate disease and stay healthy. The chiropractic profession is fortunate to have twelve Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation (CCRF) research chairs in major universities across the country, each of which conducts and contributes to world class research.
- There Will Never Be Enough Research To Satisfy Our Critics. For a small minority, there will never be enough research to support the use of chiropractic. These people will forever hide behind the claim that they wish to protect patients from quackish practices.

The Pediatrics Section

-
- There has been much discussion about the role of chiropractic care in the evaluation, management, and treatment of pediatric patients. To date, no specific guidelines have been adopted that address this issue from an evidence based perspective. Now there is the: Best Practices Recommendations for Chiropractic Care for Infants, Children, and Adolescents: Results of a Consensus Process, crafted by members of the American Chiropractic Association, the International Chiropractors Association, and the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.
- You may also enjoy this review of the effectiveness of Complementary and Alternative Medical Therapies for Children With Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
- You'll enjoy this case review of 114 infants who were diagnosed with sub-optimal feeding patterns. They were referred by their doctors to the AECC student clinic where they were found to be subluxated. After minimal care (5 visits in 2 weeks) the majority of children improved.
- A new survey among adolescents aged 15-16 years revealed that Almost half of the girls and one third of the boys reported mild neck or occipital pain, or shoulder pain, and 5% of girls and 2% of boys reported severe neck or occipital pain, or shoulder pain during the past 6 months.
- Review FCER and ICPA's response to a recent biased Pediatrics article that discussed the risks associated with chiropractic adjusting for children without reporting the relative risks of medical procedures for the same conditions, or the the benefits of spinal manipulation for children which have been amply described in the research literature.

ChiroZINE ~ Spinal Manipulation May Help Reduce Spinal Degenerative Joint Disease and Disability

-
- Learn about how adjusting the hypomobile manipulable joint lesion impacts the progress of Degenerative Joint Disease.
- This novel study wanted to determine whether giving the children rolling luggage to carry their school books would reduce spinal stress. As it turns out, what might work well for Mom at the airport, does not work so well for Junior, lugging his books across uneven sidewalks on the way to school.
- Three studies comparing spinal manipulation with acupuncture — a pilot study, then a randomized controlled clinical trial, followed by a one-year follow-up study — demonstrated that chiropractic care was the only “treatment” that provided broad-based long-term benefits.
- In another study, data collected from 28,807 treatment consultations and 19,722 new patients, reviewed significant predictors for immediate improvement with care.
- Another new survey reveals that a much higher percentage of chiropractic patients seek more than “musculoskeletal care” than has previously been recognized.
- A new retrospective analysis of 70,274 member-months in a 7-year period within an IPA, comparing medical management to chiropractic management, demonstrated decreases of 60.2% in-hospital admissions 59.0% less hospital days, 62.0% less outpatient surgeries and procedures, and 85% less pharmaceutical costs when compared with conventional medicine IPA performance.

The Acupuncture Section

-
- A newly acquired FULL TEXT article titled The Neuroimmune Basis of Anti-inflammatory Acupuncture proposes that the anti-inflammatory power of acupuncture may be more successful for the treatment of a number of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases than standard medical management.
- In a second study, reviewing who uses acupuncture, and for what purpose, in a group of 9408 acupuncture patients, 74% of patients were female. The most common main complaint reported was musculo-skeletal (38%), followed by psychological (11%), general (9%), neurological (8%) and gynaecological/obstetric (8%), while 5% of patients were seeking treatment for their general well-being. Read about this in the Articles section. Learn more about this ancient healing technique.
- This section links to acupuncture journals, information websites, and also contains numerous research articles.

Chiropractic and Chronic Neck Pain

-
- A recent balanced article in the Feb 13, 2008 issue of JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) revealed that between 1997 and 2005, the costs for “standard medical management” of spinal pain syndromes (both neck and back) increased by an inflation-adjusted 65%, while measured outcomes for physical functioning, work or school limitations, and social limitations among adult actually declined! During this same period, there was also an overall increase in the number of individuals who experienced neck or back pain (from 20.7% to 24.7%).
- However, during this same time period, the inclusion of a chiropractic benefit within a large managed care program (observed over a 4-year period) resulted in significant savings, as well as a reductions in the rates of surgery, and unnecessary use of advanced imaging, inpatient care, and plain-film radiographs.

The Medicare Section

-
Kathleen Sebelius, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, just released an update on the Chiropractic Demonstration Project in Medicare (conducted from 4-1-2005 to 3-31-2007) to the President and Congress. One of the significant findings of this report was that patients reported a high rate of satisfaction with the care they receive from doctors of chiropractic. When asked to rate their satisfaction on a 10-point scale, 87 percent of patients in the study gave their doctor of chiropractic a level of 8 or higher. What’s more, 56 percent of those patients rated their chiropractor with a perfect 10. You may want to explore more about Medicare's Chiropractic Demonstration Project, which tested expanded access to chiropractic services for America's senior citizens, in a two-year, four-site demonstration project. This section provides the locations and the expanded services chiropractors will provide.

Are German Orthopedic Surgeons Killing People With Chiropractic?

-
I present for your review an abstract from the Journal of Neurology. This abstract blatantly conceals the facts stated in the body of the paper when it states that “we describe 36 patients with vertebral artery dissections and prior chiropractic neck manipulation”. When I read that sentence, I am led to believe that “real-live chiropractors” (meaning licensed Doctors of Chiropractic, who received their training at a CCE/WCCE accredited school) were the ones to provide the “chiropractic neck manipulation”. Unfortunately, that couldn't be further from the truth! You can review many other articles like this at the Stroke Page.

The Free Rehabilitation Monographs Section

-
All the Monographs have being updated with “hot links” (a.k.a anchored links) to make it easier to navigate through these remarkable articles. Dr. Richard C Schafer donated this collection of rehabilitation monographs to our profession. You will find them of great value! "RC" was the first chiropractor to be published by a medical publication house (Williams & Wilkins) and he is still our profession's most prolific author.
