114 Infants Improve Breastfeeding With Chiropractic

-
You'll enjoy this case review of 114 infants who were diagnosed with sub-optimal feeding patterns. They were referred by their doctors to the AECC student clinic where they were found to be subluxated. After minimal care (5 visits in 2 weeks) the majority of children improved. YAY!!! A new survey among adolescents aged 15-16 years revealed that Almost half of the girls and one third of the boys reported mild neck or occipital pain, or shoulder pain, and 5% of girls and 2% of boys reported severe neck or occipital pain, or shoulder pain during the past 6 months. Review FCER and ICPA's response to the recent biased Pediatrics article that discussed the risks associated with chiropractic adjusting for children without reporting the relative risks of medical procedures for the same conditions, or the the benefits of spinal manipulation for children which have been amply described in the research literature. Explore the research supporting chiropractic care for children. Look for the PEDIATRICS Section in the CAM drop-down.

Patients in Medicare Demonstration Project Give Their Chiropractors High Marks

-
January 26, 2010 — Kathleen Sebelius, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, just released an update on the Chiropractic Demonstration Project in Medicare (conducted from 4-1-2005 to 3-31-2007) to the President and Congress. One of the significant findings of this report was that patients reported a high rate of satisfaction with the care they receive from doctors of chiropractic. When asked to rate their satisfaction on a 10-point scale, 87 percent of patients in the study gave their doctor of chiropractic a level of 8 or higher. What’s more, 56 percent of those patients rated their chiropractor with a perfect 10. You may want to explore more about Medicare's Chiropractic Demonstration Project, which tested expanded access to chiropractic services for America's senior citizens, in a two-year, four-site demonstration project. This section provides the locations and the expanded services chiropractors will provide. Look for the MEDICARE Section in the TOOLS drop-down.

The Effect of Backpacks on the Lumbar Spine in Children

-
Review a new study, the first to use advances studies (standing MRI) to demonstrate why overloaded backpacks cause pain in children. Is it safe to adjust someone with a disc herniation in the neck or low back? Find out more at the Disc Herniation Page and at the Radiculopathy Pages. They review the safety of chiropractic care, and detail how chiropractic care can reduce pain and inflammation, without the risk of resorting to dangerous medications. The Rand SF-36 is now available for your use in the Outcome Assessment section. The Articles of Interest section of the LINKS has been permanently relocated to ChiroZine. NOTE: Informed Consent involves discussing the Iatrogenic Side Effects of standard medical alternatives to conservative chiropractic care. The LINKS Section can be found on the tan toolbar.

Are You Too Young To Supplement?
-
The whole point of nutritional supplementation should be about prevention, not playing the medical model of symptom treatment. A new study involving 5,201 female U.S. Navy recruits puts this into perspective. Half this group was given calcium and vitamin D supplementation during basic training, and the amazing result was a reduction of 25% in stress fractures. Considering that 21% of recruits usually experience a stress fracture, this is a big deal to the Navy. You may also enjoy the new Resveratrol Page as it reviews research demonstrating the health and longevity benefits of this power polyphenol. A small randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial reports that zinc reduces infection rates in seniors. Another recent NIH-funded study found that the estrogenic properties of soy may mimic the neuroprotective benefits of estrogen replacement therapy in reducing the risk of Alzheimer's Disease, without risking the extra incidence of developing breast cancer and certain cardiovascular disorders. The Nutrition section contains non-solicitous articles and research about a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and herbals. Look for the NUTRITION Section in the CAM drop-down.

ChiroZINE ~ Chiropractic Superior to Acupuncture for Relief of Chronic Spinal Pain
-
Three studies comparing spinal manipulation with acupuncture — a pilot study, then a randomized controlled clinical trial, followed by a one-year follow-up study — demonstrated that chiropractic care was the only “treatment” that provided broad-based long-term benefits. In another study, data collected from 28,807 treatment consultations and 19,722 new patients, reviewed significant predictors for immediate improvement with care. Another new survey reveals that a much higher percentage of chiropractic patients seek more than “musculoskeletal care” than has previously been recognized. A new retrospective analysis of 70,274 member-months in a 7-year period within an IPA, comparing medical management to chiropractic management, demonstrated decreases of 60.2% in-hospital admissions 59.0% less hospital days, 62.0% less outpatient surgeries and procedures, and 85% less pharmaceutical costs when compared with conventional medicine IPA performance. ChiroZINE is the first chiropractic newspaper on the internet, providing you with news and science reviews.

Acupuncture For Combating Auto-Immune Disorders
-
A newly acquired FULL TEXT article titled The Neuroimmune Basis of Anti-inflammatory Acupuncture proposes that the anti-inflammatory power of acupuncture may be more successful for the treatment of a number of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases than standard medical management. In a second study, reviwwing who uses acupuncture, and for what purpose, in a group of 9408 acupuncture patients, 74% of patients were female. The most common main complaint reported was musculo-skeletal (38%), followed by psychological (11%), general (9%), neurological (8%) and gynaecological/obstetric (8%), while 5% of patients were seeking treatment for their general well-being. Read about this in the Articles section. Learn more about this ancient healing technique. This section links to acupuncture journals, information websites, and also contains significant research articles. Look for the ACUPUNCTURE Section in the CAM drop-down.

Facet Joint Inflammation Induces Radiculopathy
-
Japanese orthopedists just demonstrated that mechanically induced facet inflammation leads to nerve root radiculopathy (induced allodynia). This work supports yet another aspect of the Vertebral Subluxation Complex hypothesis. This article can be found in the About Chiropractic Adjusting Page. Another new study reveals that Upper Cervical adjusting lowered blood pressure better than a two-drug combination therapy. There are many other articles like this in the Chiropractic Research Results for a Variety of Conditions Page. Look for the CHIROPRACTIC RESEARCH Section in the RESEARCH drop-down.

The Safety of Chiropractic
-
You may enjoy the new Safety of Chiropractic Page, which contains significant research demonstrating that chiropractic is the safest approach available for the relief of neck pain, back pain, headaches and other “musculo–skeletal” complaints. This new page details that research, and discusses how modern medicine has contributed to the Myth that chiropractic care is dangerous.

Surviving the Scrutiny of File Review
-
Following the release of the Medicare OIG report, insurers are increasingly reviewing claims. Are your records missing or inadequately presenting key elements, like proper evaluation, treatment plans, medical necessity, and/or contraindications to treatment? If that is likely, then read Dr. Schetchikova's article Surviving the Scrutiny. Learn more about what needs to be recorded and tracked within the patient file. Another article by Robert Mootz, D.C. outlines efficient charting methods. Look for them in the ARTICLES section. Find the DOCUMENTATION Section in the TOOLS drop-down.

Chiropractic and Chronic Neck Pain
-
A recent balanced article in the Feb 13, 2008 issue of JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) revealed that between 1997 and 2005, the costs for “standard medical management” of spinal pain syndromes (both neck and back) increased by an inflation-adjusted 65%, while measured outcomes for physical functioning, work or school limitations, and social limitations among adult actually declined! During this same period, there was also an overall increase in the number of individuals who experienced neck or back pain (from 20.7% to 24.7%). However, during this same time period, the inclusion of a chiropractic benefit within a large managed care program (observed over a 4-year period) resulted in significant savings, as well as a reductions in the rates of surgery, and unnecessary use of advanced imaging, inpatient care, and plain-film radiographs.
